Monuments of the People

Another attractive aspect of Paros is the beauty of its monuments. Uncomplicated and functional, these structures are miracles of folk craftsmanship. With a little imagination, it is still possible to hear small voices and whispers when approaching the ancient stones used to build the castle in Parikia, the Temple of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, and ruins of other ancient temples on the island.

Parikia
  • Ancient Cemetery - 8th century BC to 2nd century AD, served the island for centuries (opposite the fishing port)
  • Venetian Castle - 13th century AD (in the center of the traditional settlement)
  • Marble Fountains - built by the Mavrogenis Family (in the streets of Parikia)
  • Asclepion - 4th century BC, temple dedicated to Asclepius, the God of medicine (on the road to Aliki)
  • Ancient Pottery Workshop (Tholos, near the perimeter road)
  • Temple of Delion Apollo and Artemis - 5th century BC (Krios)
  • The Three Churches - columns from the tomb of Archilochus were found there and the churches were built with marble from the ancient temples in the region (1km north of Parikia)

Naoussa
  • Koukounaries - 12th century BC, Mycenaean Acropolis 50,000 m2 with important findings (Kolybithres)
  • Early Cycladic
  • Cemetery at Plastiras - characteristic idols (Kolybithres)
  • Fortified Settlement - Economou islet (Lageri Bay)
  • Venetian Castle (Kastelli) - 15th century AD, protects the port from the north winds, built by the Sommaripa dynasty

Marpissa
Ruins of a Venetian Castle - 15th century AD (Kefalos Hill, Agios Antonios, east of Marpissa)

Marmara
Marble Basins - from sections of ancient columns (near the church of Pera Panagia)

Drios
The ancient Parians carved grooves into the rocks to facilitate grounding ships on the beach in Drios
