Cycling Excursion to Paros

Late spring is the perfect time to jump on your bike and come to Paros. Temperatures are not so high as to negatively impact the effort, and the winds that could hinder movement, particularly when cycling up a steep road, have not yet begun. The more adventurous could combine their cycling trip with a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean.

Load your bike with the bare necessities and get on the first ferry to Parikia. When choosing the best bike for the proposed route, we suggest opting for a mountain bike, with 26-inch rims, to facilitate the uphill sections and dirt roads of the route.

Cycle eastwards from Parikia and take the road towards the Ancient Quarries and Lefkes. It is a gentle ascent, but some sections will require first gear, particularly when leaving the last houses of Parikia behind, when approaching the quarries and the section below the quarries that is a little steeper. It is a total of approximately 6.5 kilometers uphill. With the marble quarries behind you and to the right, a downhill section begins, leading to just outside the village of Kostos. Lefkes is approximately two kilometers further. This is where the asphalt road ends and the Byzantine Road begins, which will prove challenging if not on a mountain bike. To find the Byzantine Road, ask for Louki's café, which is where it starts.

Paved with slabs and marble, the thousand-year old Byzantine Road is 3.5 kilometers long and leads to your next stop: the village of Prodromos. Of the 3.5 km., only 150-200 meters are uphill. The entire route from Lefkes to Prodromos is in a region of great natural beauty, on the slope of a hill above a ravine.

After Prodromos, follow the asphalt road towards Marmara and Molos beach. Leave the asphalt road again and head north on the small dirt road above the beach, and proceed under Antikefalos Hill to Tsoukalia beach. You will now be riding alongside the sea, on a gentle dirt road, perfect for gathering speed on your mountain bike.
