Easter in the Villages of Paros

Easter on Paros and the representations of the Passions of Christ are unique experiences. Visitors to the island leave cosmopolitan Parikia and Naoussa behind and head east for the Holy Week and Resurrection of our Lord, through the representation of his life and passions. It is a custom that began approximately 80 years ago before the War, and was organized by Vasileia Kafourou, the teacher of the village of Marpissa.

On Good Friday, during the procession of the Epitaph through and around the village of Marpissa, the associations and local council of the Municipal District of Marpissa stage the events that represent snapshots of the life of Jesus, his death and resurrection. Children and youths, dressed in clothing from that era, set the stage at various points along the route of the Epitaph and add a unique theatricality to an already charged and solemn atmosphere, deepening the religious significance of Easter weekend.

These theatrical performances feature scenes from the Resurrection of Lazarus, the Last Supper, Prayers at Mount Olive, the Ascent to Cavalry and many other moments capturing the journey of Jesus to the Cross and Redemption. Representations are also staged in the villages of Marmara, Prodromos, Lefkes and Aspro Chorio.
