Environmental and Cultural Park of Paros
The Cultural Park of Paros was founded in 2009 with the aim to develop into a contemporary alternative recreation area and promote the Agios Ioannis Detis peninsula, an area rich in history, as it comprises a prehistoric settlement, the post-Byzantine monastery of Agios Ioannis and the ruins of the headquarters of the Russian fleet on the island during the first Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774).
The peninsula is also an important attraction for visitors and nature enthusiasts due to its infinite natural beauty.
The Park was implemented with ecologically friendly technical standards and slow, studied interventions to the landscape, and in the context of sustainable management of the ecosystem, adopted only activities that would not disrupt it.
The Park (80 hectares owned by the Municipality of Paros) features:
organized and unspoilt beaches,
a stone-built snack bar,
cinema,
amphitheater for concerts/performances (700 seats) where the annual summer festival is organized,
semi-outdoor exhibition space,
7 km. network of hiking paths,
300 parking spaces.
The Orlofika Museum will be completed in the future, and will explain the historical context and impact on the life of the island of the Russian naval base, which was based on the Agios Ioannis Detis peninsula during the first Russo-Turkish War from 1770-1774.
