As the island is dominated by rock and sea, the presence of orange and lemon fruit trees comes as quite a surprise. In most cases they are private trees in small gardens or orchards, tended by residents who keep the fruit for their own use. There are also many other trees, including plane, cypress, almond, locust, mulberry, poplar, medlar, lilac and the sea pines that adorn the beaches of the islands.
Olive trees and vineyards also prevail, which are cultivated to produce oil and wine - the renowned Protective Designation of Origin (PDO) wine of Paros (Monemvasia variety). There was a time when the vineyards covered over 1,000 hectares of the island. Today however, they are limited to 500 hectares due to the development of tourism.
Shrubs and flowering plants play a very important role in the landscape of Paros. Families of shrubs flourish in the foothills, forming low forest cover.
In spring, multicolored flowers bloom as far as the eye can see: poppies, daisies, orchids, spiny brooms, daffodils, hartwort, lupins and aromatic herbs like sage and thyme.
